Honington Milepost

This milepost was found in a garden in Kenilworth after the completion of the project to restore six, then believed to be the only survivors of the series, back in 2017.

Les Rose, an enthusiast for antique ‘stuff’ (according to his family) had bought it many years ago, probably at a farm sale , and his widow and family very kindly donated it to The Milestone Society for restoration. It was uplifted in 2019, in good condition apart from having lost the base section, designed to be buried. Les may well have bought it like that.

Various problems and delays intervened, not least the Covid pandemic, but at last in June 2023 we were able to collect the milepost from the restorers Leander Architectural at Dove Holes, near Buxton in Derbyshire, and see it lifted into position at an historically correct site, on what is now the A3400 north of Shipston on Stour and just north of the turn to Honington (with the former Honington toll-house on the corner).

It is good to see it returned to roadside duties, in memory of its rescuer Les Rose, of Kenilworth.
